Support for refugees with
disabilities and/or care needs
From May 2022 to June 2024, the German Red Cross operated the Federal Point Of Contact for refugees with disabilities and/or care needs in close coordination with the federal and state governments. The corresponding concept was developed and refined by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) together with the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).
The main task of the Federal Contact Point ("Bundeskontaktstelle") is to identify the support needs of newly arriving refugees (primarily larger groups) to Germany before they arrive in order to arrange for suitable offers in inpatient care or assistance for integration upon their arrival. In addition, the BKS serves as as contact point for information requests around health care in Germany. Please understand that the BKS cannot consult each individual case and does not give legal advice.
Why do we need a central contact point?
Due to the geographic proximity and the possibility of fleeing overland to neighboring European countries, far more people with disabilities and/or care needs are fleeing compared to past refugee movements.
However, the receiving federal states and municipalities often only find out about arriving refugees and their care needs at a later stage. This makes it difficult to plan ahead, which is necessary in order to provide suitable offers of help. The BKS helps to improve the flow of information between all relevant actors (e.g. state coordination offices and hubs).
